The Banda Archipelago, located in the Maluku Province and under the administration of Central Maluku Regency, is not only rich in history but also boasts extraordinary marine biodiversity. In recent years, this area has seen an increase in both local and international tourists eager to explore the natural beauty and history of the Banda Archipelago. However, the rise in tourist visits, particularly through Live On Board (LOB) vessels, presents challenges for the preservation of the region’s marine ecosystems.
One of the main issues is the damage to coral reef ecosystems due to inadequate mooring facilities. This situation forces vessels navigating the area to anchor directly on coral reefs, often causing harm to underwater habitats. In response to this, the EcoNusa Foundation, in collaboration with Banda Naira University (UBN) and the Coordination Forum for the Supervision and Utilization of Marine and Fisheries Resources in the Banda Archipelago, has begun to promote the initiation of ship mooring as a crucial step to protect marine biodiversity and support sustainable tourism development in the Banda Archipelago.
Gadri R Attamimi, Head of the EcoNusa Maluku Office, stated that the establishment of mooring facilities is a joint effort to protect the biodiversity in the Banda Archipelago.
“With the increasing tourism activities, especially LOBs, in Banda, we see an urgency for mooring facilities to protect the biodiversity in the Banda Islands,” said Gadri during the opening of the Workshop and FGD on the Supervision of Marine and Fisheries Resource Utilization for the Initiation of Mooring Construction in the Banda Archipelago on August 10, 2024.
The Importance of Ship Mooring for Marine Ecosystem Protection
Ship mooring is a system designed to keep vessels in place without the need to drop an anchor. This system consists of a buoy installed on the water’s surface connected to the seabed with ropes or chains attached to a special anchor or concrete block. Moorings are installed at designated locations, allowing ships to dock without damaging the underwater environment.
In the Banda Archipelago, establishing ship moorings is crucial because the waters here are home to over 600 species of fish, seagrass, and coral reefs. Proper mooring installation will help reduce the negative impact of tourism activities, especially diving, which is a major attraction for tourists in the region.
Collaboration with Stakeholders
DR. Muhammad Farid M.Sos, Rector of Banda Naira University (UBN), emphasized the importance of this mooring initiative as a crucial step in preserving the marine ecosystem in the Banda Archipelago. According to him, this work cannot be done alone.
“This is a very relevant initiative needed by Banda Naira. We must realize this initiative together. This is our region, so we must take care of it together. If the islands are damaged and destroyed, Banda will no longer be a destination for people. We cannot move forward alone,” said the Rector of UBN.
Similarly, Banda District Head Kadir Sailan stated that the installation of moorings in Banda should be expedited. He suggested that the mooring system should not be limited to Banda Naira alone but should also be implemented in other islands in the area.
“If possible, not just in Banda Naira but also in other islands. If there are violations, there must be strict enforcement,” he said.
Meanwhile, Saifullah Marasabessy, S.Pi., M.Si., Head of the Regional Branch Office for the Banda Archipelago, stated that the initiative to establish ship moorings is a crucial step that requires full support from all parties. To ensure the sustainability of the marine ecosystem in the Banda Archipelago, we must ensure that every action taken can protect biodiversity and minimize negative impacts on the environment.
“With adequate mooring facilities, we can reduce damage to coral reefs and ensure that this area remains a sustainable and environmentally friendly tourist destination.”
Positive Impact on Sustainable Tourism
With ship moorings installed at strategic locations in the Banda Archipelago, it is hoped that a safer environment for coral reefs and other marine life will be created. In addition to protecting the ecosystem, this step will enhance the image of the Banda Archipelago as an environmentally conscious tourist destination, attracting more ecologically aware visitors.
Moreover, with proper management, ship moorings can provide additional income for local communities through the management and maintenance of these facilities. This can also open opportunities for capacity building and skill development in related fields, such as sustainable tourism management and marine conservation.
