EcoNusa Annual Report 2024: Weaving Self-Reliance in Eastern Indonesia

The 2024 EcoNusa Annual Report, “Weaving Self-Reliance in Eastern Indonesia,” documents the organization’s efforts to promote equitable and sustainable natural resource management by strengthening local initiatives amidst dynamic political and fundraising challenges. It highlights a resilient, adaptive strategy focused on deep collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) to safeguard the region’s vital forests, oceans, and biodiversity. The report underscores EcoNusa’s commitment to transforming obstacles into opportunities for impactful, community-centered conservation and development throughout Eastern Indonesia.

Key achievements detailed include significant advancements in championing Indigenous Peoples’ rights through participatory land mapping and policy advocacy; the mobilization of over 67,560 youth in climate action via the Aksi Muda Jaga Iklim movement; fostering economic independence for IPLCs by marketing sustainable commodities such as 280 tons of agroforestry-based spices and 33.8 tons of copra through the KOBUMI initiative; and the amplification of Eastern Indonesia’s natural and cultural wealth to over 2.2 million people via digital engagement. The strategic relocation of core operations to Sorong is presented as a pivotal move to deepen grassroots engagement and ensure that development is effective, purposeful, and aligned with community needs and ecosystem sustainability.
