MUI Issued Fatwa on The Law for Controlling Global Climate Change

Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI/The Ulama Council of Indonesia) has issued Fatwa Number 86/2023 on The Law for Controlling Global Climate Change. This fatwa was launched on Friday, February 23, 2024, and was attended by representatives from ministries/agencies, civil society organizations, business representatives, and the media. In this fatwa, MUI declares that all actions that can cause environmental damage and impact climate crises are forbidden (haram). This includes uncontrolled deforestation and forest burning that damage natural ecosystems.

The Fatwa on The Law for Controlling Global Climate Change is the result of efforts by EcoNusa Foundation, the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative (IRI) Indonesia, Ummah4Earth, and Manka. With the issuance of this fatwa, the Muslim community will have a strong legal basis to participate in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
