EcoNusa Foundation, in collaboration with Banda Naira University, organized a Workshop and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Monitoring the Utilization of Marine and Fisheries Resources for the Initiation of Mooring Installation in the Banda Islands on Saturday, August 10, 2024. The event aimed to discuss strategic steps for protecting the marine ecosystem in the Banda Islands through the installation of mooring buoys at popular underwater tourism spots.
The installation of these mooring buoys is crucial to ensure that tourism activities, particularly diving and other boat-related activities, do not damage coral reefs and other marine habitats. By using moorings, boats can anchor at designated locations without dropping anchors directly onto the seabed, which has often caused damage to coral reefs.
The event was attended by various stakeholders, including government officials, academics, traditional leaders (Raja-Raja Negeri Adat), tourism operators, and CSO partners in Banda Naira.
