The Indigenous Aara Community Submits Customary Land Recognition Proposal to the Kaimana Regency Government

Amid regional development dynamics, the Indigenous Aara Community of West Papua has taken a significant step forward by submitting a proposal to the Kaimana Regency Government for the recognition of their customary lands. On November 1, 2024, Aara Village Chief Melkianus Tenawe, accompanied by an indigenous delegation, submitted the proposal documents. They were supported by the EcoNusa Foundation, which has provided guidance since the initial stages, including the FPIC process, land mapping, and customary consultations.

This recognition is not merely about legal rights but also concerns the preservation of their livelihood, culture, and the natural resources they manage. The document submission, accompanied by traditional music and dance, symbolizes the importance of customary lands as a vital part of their identity that deserves respect. Kaimana Regional Secretary Donald Wakum acknowledged the Aara community’s efforts and will verify and validate the documents in accordance with established procedures.

The Aara community hopes that this recognition will strengthen their sovereignty over customary lands, protect natural resources, and ensure sustainability for future generations.
