Strengthening Indigenous Rights, Forest and Marine Conservation, and Sustainable Livelihoods in the RPJMD

The Technical Guidance (Bimtek) for the Preparation of the RPJMD of Tanah Papua and the Maluku Islands 2025 underscores the importance of balancing economic development, environmental protection, and the well-being of Indigenous communities. Engaging Bappeda, DLH, OPD, and other stakeholders, this policy aims to ensure sustainable and ecologically based development. The event took place over two days, from March 13 to 14, 2025, with representatives from various provinces and districts participating.

With 32.39 million hectares of forests in Papua and 4.8 million hectares in Maluku, as well as marine areas rich in fishery resources, threats such as deforestation, land encroachment, and marine exploitation continue to rise. Therefore, integrating Strategic Environmental Assessment (KLHS) into the RPJMD is a crucial step to align development policies with ecosystem conservation efforts and Indigenous community empowerment.

As part of its commitment, EcoNusa promotes community-based economies through sustainable fisheries, Indigenous ecotourism, and the utilization of non-timber forest products. Bustar Maitar, CEO of EcoNusa, emphasized that the RPJMD must accommodate the welfare of Indigenous communities while ensuring the protection of forests and oceans as an investment for future generations. EcoNusa remains committed to supporting regional development policies that uphold environmental sustainability and social justice.
