Strengthening Fisher Groups’ Capacity through GPS Training and Shrimp Broth Production in South Sorong

From April 21 to May 2, 2025, the EcoNusa Foundation conducted a capacity-building program in Inanwatan District, South Sorong Regency. The initiative focused on two key areas: GPS training for fisher groups in Isogo Village and technical assistance in producing shrimp broth and shrimp paste for women’s groups in Mate Village. A total of 64 participants—including village authorities, traditional leaders, youth representatives, and local fisher groups—actively took part in the sessions.

The GPS training enhanced fishers’ ability to map traditional marine territories and fishing zones independently. Simultaneously, the shrimp broth and paste training aimed to increase the economic value of local marine commodities through simple and scalable processing techniques. The program resulted in improved technical skills, pilot production trials, and a plan to build a community weighing facility. Despite logistical and communication challenges, the participatory approach and active engagement of fisher groups played a vital role in the program’s success. This initiative represents a strategic effort to strengthen village-based economies and promote sustainable customary marine governance.
