Mooring Buoy Installation in the Banda Islands: A Step Toward Coral Reef Protection and Sustainable Tourism

To preserve the marine ecosystem in the Banda Islands—particularly the fragile coral reefs—mooring buoys have been installed at six sites across three islands: Hatta, Manukang, and Rhun.

This initiative aims to reduce the damage caused by the frequent use of anchors by Liveaboard (LoB) vessels, especially during the high tourist season. Mooring buoys offer a safe anchoring alternative, allowing boats to secure without dropping anchors onto the seabed. As a result, coral reef structures remain intact, protecting vital habitats that support the area’s rich marine biodiversity and its appeal as a diving destination.

Beyond marine conservation, the installation of mooring buoys promotes the principles of sustainable tourism. By safeguarding the health of marine ecosystems, tourism in the Banda Islands can continue to grow responsibly—generating long-term benefits for local communities without compromising the natural resources that sustain it.
