From Copra to Collaboration: MoU for Strengthening Community-Based Economy in the Padaido Islands

The Aimando-Padaido District in Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, holds vast potential in coconut cultivation and copra production. Surrounded by rich marine and forest ecosystems, the Indigenous communities not only rely on nature for their livelihoods but also uphold it as an integral part of their cultural identity.

However, limited market access, inadequate post-harvest facilities, and the lack of technical support pose significant challenges for local farmers. To address these issues, EcoNusa Foundation, the GKI Aimando-Padaido Church Council, and the Papua Provincial Office of Plantations and Livestock signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a collaborative partnership on 8 April 2025. This initiative aims to strengthen the entire copra value chain—ensuring fair market access, improved processing, and increased farmer capacity—while promoting a sustainable development model rooted in local wisdom and community self-reliance.
