Egek Festival 2025: Sustaining the Sea, Honoring Ancestral Wisdom

Egek is a traditional ecological knowledge of the Moi Tribe in Malaumkarta, Sorong, Southwest Papua—an indigenous system to manage marine resources wisely. On June 23, 2025, the Egek Festival was officially opened, attended by local government, the EcoNusa Foundation, indigenous communities, and the public from around Sorong. The ceremony began with the a’leing welcoming dance, performed in traditional barkcloth attire known as angsling, symbolizing a deep connection between people, culture, and nature. This festival is more than a celebration—it is a call to protect the ocean and uphold ancestral values for future generations.
