The bird of paradise is one of the birds endemic to Tanah Papua and part of the culture of indigenous peoples. The presence of birds of paradise is a barometer of forest conditions, because birds only live in dense forests. Forests are also the people’s livelihood. Unfortunately, this type of bird is threatened with extinction due to forest destruction and illegal hunting.
EcoNusa Foundation in collaboration with Michael Jakarimilena and Floranesia Lantang launched the children’s story book Sampari the Bird of Paradise: Harvest Period and Matoa Fairy to campaign for the protection of forests and birds of paradise. This launch was carried out at the National Library, Jakarta, December 11 2023.
