Advancing Customary Land Recognition through Evaluation and Monitoring in Bintuni and Tambrauw

On May 16, 2025, the EcoNusa Foundation conducted evaluation and monitoring activities in Teluk Bintuni and Tambrauw Regencies, as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthen the recognition of customary territories through collaborative and community-based approaches. In Teluk Bintuni, the efforts focused on enhancing support from the Kuri Indigenous People by coordinating with community leaders and youth in Suga Village, as well as holding discussions with the Bintuni Indigenous Peoples Association (PMHA) to align steps with the district government.

Meanwhile, in Tambrauw, the focus was on accelerating the finalization of the territorial proposal documents for the Irires Indigenous Group. Through constructive dialogues involving PMHA Tambrauw, the Regional Legislative Council (DPRK), the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) of Southwest Papua, and development partners, the parties agreed on territorial boundaries and addressed overlapping land claims. The process culminated in the formal submission of the proposal by Irires community representatives to the Tambrauw District Government. This milestone reflects a strong commitment to establishing inclusive, just, and sustainable governance of customary territories.
