Strengthening Rights-Based Economic Solutions and Nature Conservation in Tanah Papua and the Maluku Islands

EcoNusa Foundation, in collaboration with Pollination, hosted a workshop titled “Strengthening Rights-Based Economic Solutions and Nature Conservation in Tanah Papua and Maluku Islands” on July 23–24, 2025, in Sorong. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to strengthen the understanding of Indigenous Peoples on carbon issues, nature-based solutions, and equitable and sustainable natural resource governance. The workshop emphasized the importance of recognizing Indigenous territorial rights, supporting institutional innovations such as community-owned enterprises (BUMMA), and providing legal assistance for Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes. Participants agreed that Indigenous Peoples must be positioned as key actors in both environmental conservation and local economic development. These efforts lay the foundation for a development model that is inclusive, just, and grounded in rights and sustainability.
