Carbon Economic Value Workshop in South Papua: Advancing Fair and Inclusive Governance

The Carbon Economic Value Workshop held on 21 May 2024 in Merauke marked a key milestone in strengthening strategies for carbon-based natural resource management in South Papua. Initiated by the EcoNusa Foundation and the South Papua Provincial Government Secretariat, the event brought together diverse stakeholders—including local government, indigenous institutions, civil society organizations, academics, and community representatives.

With extensive forest cover, South Papua holds significant potential in the implementation of Carbon Economic Value (CEV) schemes, aligning with Indonesia’s climate commitment. The workshop provided a platform to explore opportunities for results-based payment mechanisms and fair carbon trade systems under national policy frameworks.

A central focus of the discussions was the vital role of Indigenous Peoples as forest custodians and rights holders. Participants emphasized the need for recognition of rights, social inclusion, and transparency in carbon governance to ensure that economic benefits directly reach local communities. Institutional strengthening and the development of supportive regulations were also key topics addressed.

The workshop concluded with a joint commitment to develop a roadmap and implementation framework for a just and rights-based CEV system—ensuring that indigenous communities are at the heart of sustainable climate action in South Papua.
